The following guide will run through how to setup your Microsoft 365 tenancy with a Simtex Teams Direct Route SIP Trunk.

## Why this article matters

IT administrators configuring Microsoft Teams Phone for external calling in Australia typically reach this guide when comparing the three Teams calling options: Microsoft Calling Plans, Operator Connect, and Direct Routing. This setup covers the Direct Routing path, with the Simtex MyCloudVoIP portal generating the required PowerShell, performing real-time domain verification, and handling tenant onboarding without manual SBC provisioning by the customer. The service is Simtex Teams Direct Route, priced from $4.99 per channel per month with the Microsoft-certified Session Border Controller managed by Simtex on geo-redundant Perth and Sydney infrastructure on a 99.99% uptime SLA. The service is compatible with Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 tenants that have the Teams Phone Standard add-on licensed, and supports AU DIDs as well as 1300/1800 inbound numbers attached to the same tenant. Compared with Microsoft Calling Plans, Direct Routing through Simtex typically reduces per-user PSTN costs and unlocks local DID ranges and inbound 1300/1800 numbers that Calling Plans bundles do not offer. Compared with Telstra Calling for Microsoft Teams, Optus Loop, RingCentral Australia, and 8x8, the Simtex implementation preserves the native Teams client rather than introducing a parallel calling application, with transparent per-channel pricing and Australian-based engineering support for tenant cutover and ongoing routing changes.

## User & DID Management

#### Adding Phone Numbers

This is now performed via the Microsoft *Teams admin centre* portal.

Notes – this step merely makes these numbers available to add to a user or service account in Teams. It does not affect call routing or any other number management. It's simply 'a list of numbers you can use in Teams'. There is no validation.

1. Select **Voice**, then **Phone numbers**

2. Select **From Direct Routing**

3. Type in a **name** and **description** of your choice – this is simply for your internal tracking of the number(s) entered

4. From the drop-down, select the option of your choice (**range, CSV or individual**)

5. Click **Next **– and you're done!

#### Users

Any user within your tenant, which has the correct *Microsoft Teams Phone* license applied, will automatically have egress call access, given you're using the new default **Voice routing policy** which points to `MyCloudVoIP-PSTNUsage`

#### Assigning Numbers to Users

Within Teams admin centre:

1. Select **Users**, **Manage users**

2. Find/click on the user you're working on

3. Within the Assigned phone number box, click Edit or **Assign phone number**

Phone number type: **Direct Routing**

4. Assigned Phone Number: *the number you wish to link to the user*

5. Extension: *optional, you may wish to assign an internal 3 or 4-digit number*

- Emergency location is not used in Australia
